Winter HVAC Tips, 5 HVAC Tips for This Winter

Winter weather is upon us, and the last thing any property owner wants to run into is an unexpected HVAC problem leaving you with no heat. HVAC maintenance is imperative when it comes to ensuring that your unit is running as it should to keep you safe and comfortable. Here are 5 HVAC tips you should follow this Winter!

Replace your air filters

Changing your HVAC filter regularly is essential to preventing a clogged vent that can cause faulty airflow throughout your home. While different circumstances can contribute to different lifespans for your filter, generally it is best to check your air filter every 1-3 months. Clean air filters will help your unit continue to run in top condition as well as protect you from the hazards of poor air quality.

Set your thermostat for energy saving

It is that time to change your thermostat from cooling to heating mode. The ideal temperature to keep your home during the winter is 68° Fahrenheit. When away from home or sleeping at night, keeping your thermostat between 60° and 62° will save you money on your monthly bills this winter. If you must raise your thermostat a little higher some days, only do it by a few degrees. Cranking your heater up to 80° will not heat your home any faster and will raise your monthly bill. Taking advantage of a programmable thermostat is a great way to keep your home heated without breaking the bank on bills.

Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The carbon monoxide detectors in your home are important in protecting you and your family from the silent killer. It is never a bad time to test your alarms, it is recommended that you check your carbon monoxide detectors monthly.

Seal the Ductwork

Don’t let your money go to waste by having your leaky air ducts let your heat escape. Instead of trying to fix your ductwork with DIY projects you find on the internet, call an HVAC contractor for professional service. Proper sealing and insulation will protect your home and save you money at the same time!

Have your Chimneys Serviced

Having your chimneys cleaned once a year is ideal for keeping your home safe from Creosote and other flammable materials that can build up your chimney. As Winter approaches and the use of fireplaces increases, ensure that you aren’t running into a safety hazard from a dirty chimney.
