Thermostat Tips, Top 5 Winter Thermostat Tips That Can Save You Money

As a homeowner, you are probably searching for ways to save yourself some money during the winter months without sacrificing being comfortable. One of the most overlooked ways to save money is your home’s thermostat. Here are five tips that can help save you money by using your thermostat.

1. Turn down the temperature during the day

For most families, everyone in the house is at work or school during the day, leaving the house empty. This means that the temperature does not need to be as high as it is when everyone is home. Before leaving the house in the morning, turn the thermostat down a couple of degrees (if your heating fuel is gas, you can turn it down 10-15 degrees without making your house too cold.)

2. Turn down the temperature at night

Keep in mind at night time your family will be wrapped up in their blankets and pajamas, keeping them warm. Because of this, you don’t need the temperature as high. Late at night you can turn your thermostat down a couple of degrees to save yourself money and still sleep comfortably.

3. Seal leaks

While this isn’t directly something you can do with your thermostat, it will help your thermostat regulate the temperature within the house. If you have noticed that it is difficult to regulate temperatures within your house, get it inspected for leaks. Baseboards, windows, and doorways are the common culprits for leaks, and getting these fixed will help keep thermal energy in your house. This will help your thermostat manage temperatures more easily and effectively, in turn making your utility bill cheaper.

4. Filter maintenance

Another tip that isn’t directly related to your thermostat, but will help your thermostat work more effectively, is filter maintenance. When filters are dirty and clogged, the efficiency for your heating unit will go down. If you can make it a habit to check your filters around the house regularly and clean and replace them more proactively, it will help your thermostat manage the temperature in your home more effectively. In turn, lowering your utility bill.

5. Upgrade your thermostat

Upgrading your thermostat can also help with lowering your utility bill. With a programmable thermostat, you can set it to raise or lower the heat throughout the day, moderate your home’s temperature if you go on vacation, and run as efficiently as possible depending on the season. Instead of having to remember to change the temperature before you leave or go to bed, a programmable thermostat will do it all for you.
