How to Check For Water Leaks

Leaks can be a constant bother when it comes to your home. Left unattended, they can worsen and cost you more money. If you suspect a leak–maybe you see an increase in your water bill or spot droplets of water in your bathroom–it is always good to check areas in your home where you suspect a leak.

Leaking Toilets

Leaks in your toilet can cost you gallons of water, which in turn can end up being costly. If you suspect you have a leak in your toilet, don’t fret; there is a quick and easy way to solve this mystery. Simply take off the tank lid and release a few drops of food coloring in the water. Without flushing, wait about 30 minutes and check your toilet bowl. If you see any of the colored water in your toilet basin, you have a leak. If you have a leak, the repair is painless and inexpensive. Either the flapper or a flushing mechanism is malfunctioning. Both cost less than $10 to replace.

Check Your Water Meter

Your water meter is one of the best ways to determine a leak on your property and is quite easy. Make sure all water sources in and out of your home are turned off. Then locate your water meter (if you have trouble finding your meter, call your billing department). If the meter is still moving even when the water is turned off, you have a leak.

Leaks in Pools

To check for a leak in your pool, you will need a bucket, saran wrap, tape, and a permanent marker. Start off by filling the bucket with water and placing it on the first step of your pool. Put a piece of tape on the inside and outside of the bucket and using your permanent marker, mark both water levels. Then, cover your bucket with saran wrap. After 24 hours, take the saran wrap off and mark where the new water levels are. If the outside water level is lower than the bucket, you have a leak.
