Water is one of the most valuable commodities on the planet. Still, water can also be one of the most destructive forces you’ll have to deal with when it comes to your home.  Whether you’re dealing with external water issues like rain, snow, or hail, or if you have to deal with internal damage from busted or leaky pipes, the outcome is usually headache-inducing, not to mention a burden on your wallet.

At Lowery, we know leaky pipes can cause significant problems in your home, including water damage, increased water bills, and mold growth. That’s why we offer emergency services (24/7) for issues requiring immediate attention.

Locate the Leak

Whenever you first see signs of water damage in your home, your first impulse might be to turn the water off, but to fix a leaky pipe, you first need to locate the leak’s source. Check the lines under your sink, basement, or wherever you suspect the leak may be. You’re in the right place if you see any signs of water damage, such as water stains or mold.

Much of your plumbing runs behind walls, under floorboards, and through your roof, so you may be unable to see where the leak is coming from. In this case, it’s probably better to wait for a professional plumber to assist you. If you can’t see the source of the leak, but there are signs of damage, the best thing to do is to turn off the water and wait for our plumbing pros to arrive.

Turn off The Water

Make sure to turn off the water supply to that area of your home. You don’t want water rushing at you while trying to work. After you shut the water off, make sure that you have a bucket close by to catch any remaining water in the lines. If you’re not sure how to turn off the water, a licensed and certified technician can do it.

Install the Repair Coupling, Patch, or Replacement Pipe

Depending on the size and location of the leak, we may need to repair or patch it. A coupling slides over the two pieces of pipe and creates a barrier to support water flow through the line. A patch, however, requires glue to adhere to the pipe.

Patches work well if the leak is small, but cutting the pipe isn’t necessary. If the leak is in a large portion of the line, we may need to replace the entire section. To do this, we remove the damaged piece and replace it with a new pipe. We use plumbing tape to secure joints and prevent future leaks.

Turn the Water Back On

Once we’ve fixed the leak, we’ll turn the water supply back on and check for any signs of leaks. If everything is working correctly, we’ll have successfully repaired your leaky pipe.
