Just like pets, children do not know what is good or bad for them, which is why it is essential to rid your home of harsh cleaners and chemicals that could be damaging to the health of your furry friends and your kids. Both have a higher risk of being vulnerable to certain harmful ingredients due to having sensitive skin and being more in direct contact with surfaces.

Growing up, my dog had a weird habit of licking the hardwood floor and the walls for some unfathomable reason. Bizarre right?

In cases like these, it would be beneficial to know which things are considered harmful, and which are considered safe household cleaners.

Chemicals to stay away from

When shopping for any cleaner, make sure to be diligent at reading the labels on the back of the container. There you will be able to find the ingredients of the product, warning signs and how to use it. Stay away from things that contain volatile organic compounds, triclosan, petroleum, phosphate, and solvents.

Also, pay attention to how your pets and children are in general after you do your annual spring cleaning. Are they complaining about how they are feeling or showing signs of a rash or bacterial infection? If so, you will need to make a trip to the store to buy all new cleaning products to keep your house guests the most comfortable.

Four everyday household products that act as cleaners

Before you throw out those harmful products, you may have these things in your pantry already that could be a better substitute.

Soap and Water

Soap and water sometimes remain underappreciated for how well it cleans your surfaces. The FDA recently did a research study that determined that plain soap is just as good as antibacterial soap. Antibacterial soap has chemicals in it that could potentially harm the immune system and cause hormone dysfunction. To combat this, specifically looking for a cleanser that does not contain triclosan or sulfate, which are both harmful to children.

At first, you may be overwhelmed by making these changes to your cleaning regimen but know that a little effort makes an impact on your children and pets well-being.
