Is Toilet Water Safe For Your Animal to Drink?

It’s a common occurrence: you walk into your bathroom to find your pet face first in the toilet bowl, lapping up water. It seems harmless (gross maybe, but harmless), and your pet is acting normal, but is it truly safe for your pet to drink?

Toilet Cleaners

Clip-on toilet cleaning discs and tablets are a relatively common method to maintain a clean toilet. These cleaners typically turn the water blue and look as though they may be dangerous to your pets. The blue water is probably harmless to your pet in small doses; however, it’s possible that it can cause an upset stomach. In this case, you can help your pet by giving them water or milk. Doing this will dilute the cleaning water that is already in their stomach.

If your pet ingests a disc or tablet, it’s a much more dangerous situation, and you will need to contact your veterinarian immediately.

Chemicals

Many people use antifreeze in their toilets during the winter months to prevent the water from freezing. Antifreeze is a lethal substance for most household animals. If you use antifreeze, you should exercise caution and make sure the toilet seat remains closed when not in use.

Is it safe?

The water in the toilet may seem clean with fresh water coming through every time you flush, but this is NOT the case. With toilets being a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and germs, an upset stomach can still occur from ingesting these bacteria.

For smaller dogs or cats, it may be a concern that they fall in the toilet. It may seem unlikely, but it can happen. A good practice for every pet owning household is to keep the lid down to avoid any incident.
